PARK-HOTEL MATTENHOF
3800 Interlaken
The large, government rated four star Park Hotel Mattenhof is in a secluded area at the edge of a forest 2 kilometers south of the city center; you can reach it by heading away from the center toward Wilderswil.
The exterior looks like a private castle, with its high, pointed roof, tower, loggias, and balconies. It was originally built as a simple and sedate pension in 1897, but adopted most of its mock-medieval form after a massive enlargement in 1906. During World War II it functioned as a hospital for injured soldiers, but for the past 30 years it has been managed by Peter Buehler and his family.
The lobby is large and grand with decorated pillars and intricate coving to the high ceilings. There is a lively lobby bar and a cosy lounge area with ample seating and an open fireplace leads off from the reception.
